Our Greatest Gift

What is the greatest gift you have ever received? Its Christmas season and for some, it might be raining with presents. Let's not forget about that one great gift we all have received, invariably the same.

Sometimes we cry over things that we don't have and often forgot to recognize what we are already blessed with. I haven't realised the importance of being healthy until my father got admitted in the hospital followed by a heart condition. Even my father himself didn't acknowledge it nor give any importance to his health. Rather, he mocked at people who were on diet and replied that he used to have food that he liked and still nothing happened to him. He was lethargic to do physical work and lived a pampered lifestyle most of his lifetime - outsourcing others to help with even the pettiest work that can be done by ourselves.

He never realised the importance of medical checkups, ignored symptoms every time it showed up, didn't pay any attention despite enduring chest pain for almost a week. Giving importance to our overall health, minding what we actually consume as food, the activity we give to our bodies do determine our quality of living. Invariably all of us are blessed with a wonderful life to live in this world but we always fail to acknowledge it and test our body's endurance to the very limit until it couldn't stand and finally begin to break down.

We might have heard a lot of people saying the importance of exercise and having the right quality and quantity of food to be taken but we never pay any attention to it. I understood this, strong and clear, only when my dad was in the hospital bed. That's when I realised the faster we understand this we could change our lives for the better. I began thinking why we give preference to taste over nutrition, readily available fast food over well-prepared home-cooked food! Aren't we supposed to work a bit to burn all those calories we take in? Is it only us who got addicted to everything readymade?

Let us not get obsessed with fitness but at the same time always being watchful over our food, physical activity and overall lifestyle has become necessary now than ever. Along with using appliances, let's also use our own limbs to do stuff whenever possible and necessary. Although it gets difficult to put away that device and work manually, for the sake of ourselves, let's do it. let's not forget that our health and this life is our greatest possession which can beat everything else. What's the use of having millions of dollars in the locker while our body is loaded with diseases.

During my dad's open-heart surgery I heard many people say, 'surgery has become very common and there's nothing to worry'! Well, I can take this as an advancement in medical science but it was our lethargy to blame for the situation to have gone this worse! Just because surgeries are common doesn't mean that it should happen; if there is a way to avoid it, our first preference must be that! At times surgery might be unavoidable but taking good care of ourselves do help in the long run. Most of us never realise the importance of caring for ourselves until something happens to us. Surgeries might have become common but the recovery from it is the most tedious and painstaking process that's unavoidable.

Falling sick might be associated with age but all I'm saying is having a healthy lifestyle is essential. Give your body and mind the exercise/nutrition it needs and never compromise! Do your medical health check-ups regularly whether or not you are showing symptoms - it not only helps you but your family too! Having a healthy body is the greatest wealth indeed! Let the new year and the years to come be healthy and happy to all of us! Happy new year 2021!
